HUMAN LIGHT MESSAGES by Yuri Catania
The series HUMAN LIGHT MESSAGE is part of the wider project NO FASHION PLACES OF AMERICA and introduces a new element in Yuri Catania's creative process.
The artist, who usually tries to limit or entirely avoid post-production, edits the emblematic shots of the middle American landscapes in a very evident way.
Inspired by the famous Hollywood sign, which stands on the northwest hill of Los Angeles, Yuri Catania inserts some light signals in places where the human intervention, in reality, is limited, past or completely non-existent.
The photograph that ushered in the new series was taken in Las Vegas on August 16, 2016, at 9 am: it captures the gigantic pile of debris of the former legendary Riviera Casino, demolished just the previous night. The artist has feelings for this mountain of abandoned and forgotten matter, in retrospect, he chose to digitally add the sign “GAME OVER.” In this way, he not only creates a new scenario but an authentic creative black-out.
In this series, Yuri Catania shows his vision: a vision that is receptive, sometimes passive and adaptable to the events and the world big and small transformations.
This series represents a slower reflection on the artist personal perception of reality and adds another nuance to the constant flux of landscapes instinctively captured in No Fashion Places of America.
It is the beginning of a new experimental path, characterized by words and brief messages, that, at first sight, seem to have a light and pop meaning. The illuminated signs work their way in the framework, in certain cases, they camouflage in the American landscapes. The HUMAN LIGHT MESSAGE challenges the spectator; they invite him to look thoroughly at every detail: they have to be discovered and, once they are identified, they invite to meditate on their significance.
Provocation is the engine that drives the entire project: Yuri Catania offers an ironic vision of the massive use of billboard and advertising signs typical of United States. The artist rephrases and reinvents the vast catalog of cultural symbols and commercial acts and places them in unlikely places, although the history of the use and abuse of this particular media makes them look credible places.
The word LIGHT in the title hence takes different meanings, it is a reference to the apparent irony of the light messages, but it also recalls their function: to shed a new view of the landscapes photographed, encouraging the spectator to look at them from a new perspective.
The appearance of the HUMAN LIGHT MESSAGE holds a surreal allure and materialize in giant neon Hollywood style sign that shows up in unusual places and create a parallel world.
Yuri Catania makes a clear statement about the American lifestyle and its constant, ever-present invite to consume goods that can be found even in the most remote areas of the country. Everything is on sale; you just need a sign!
The photographs of the series HUMAN LIGHT MESSAGE are in an edition of 5.
Riviera GameOver, Las Vegas, 9:00 am, August 16th, 2016 is a unique piece.
